Dear Parents - Recently information was sent to you by way of email regarding an Action Alert for Nonpublic School Transportation.

Please review this information and take action by following the instructions on the information sheet.

For more information please review the information below:

Action Alert!

ISSUE:           The ceiling for nonpublic school transportation, currently at $884.00 per pupil, has not been increased since the 2008-2009 school year.  As a result, nonpublic school students are losing transportation services because of the costs incurred by districts and private contractors.

OUR

POSITION:    Over the years,  New Jersey Catholic Conference and the New Jersey Network of Catholic School Families have continued to find ways to increase transportation for nonpublic school pupils.  As a result, after attempting ways to reconfigure nonpublic transportation, we have no other alternative other than to ask for the increase commensurate with increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over the years between 2008 and 2014.

ACTION:       Please call, email, or write Governor Christie on a continuing basis between now and the release of his Budget in February to ask for this increase.  Please keep the following points in mind:

  1. Public school students living within the designated mileage limits are never denied a ride to school of enrollment.
  2. Nonpublic school students are dependent upon the bids submitted by public school districts and private contractors which do not exceed the $884.00 per pupil limit.
  3. In contacting Governor Christie’s Office, please describe in detail your own stories with respect to nonpublic school transportation.
  4. Be courteous but firm in your request for this most important health and safety issue.
  5. A question and answer document is included with this Alert.  Please feel free to use it as needed.

You may contact Governor Christie’s office as follows:

Email the Governor - http://nj.gov/governor/contact/

Call the Governor’s office - 609-292-6000

Please note that Governor Christie frequently makes Town Hall appearances.  This should be another opportunity to speak with Governor Christie about this important issue.

YOU MAY SEND A SIMPLIFIED MESSAGE THROUGH THE NJCC ADVOCACY NETWORK AT:   https://votervoice.net/NJCC/Campaigns/37671/Respond .

Action Alert:

ISSUE:           In his recent State of the State Address, Governor Christie mentioned strong support for the Opportunity Scholarship Act, commonly known as the OSA.  Previously, the Governor had inserted the OSA as a pilot project in the Budget, but it was removed by the Legislature at the last minute.

OUR

POSITION:    The New Jersey Catholic Conference and the New Jersey Network of Catholic School Families has supported the OSA from its inception as a means for children in failing schools to obtain a quality education.  We believe that the OSA in its previous iteration in the Governor’s Budget would have been an opportunity to create a program which would benefit as least a modest number of children.

ACTION:       Please call, write, or email Governor Christie and ask that the Opportunity Scholarship that he supported strongly in his recent State of the State Address be included as a pilot program in his FY 2016 State Budget.  You can contact Governor Christie the following ways:

Email the Governor - http://nj.gov/governor/contact/

Call the Governor’s office - 609-292-6000

Write the Governor –

The Honorable Chris Christie

Governor of the State of New Jersey

The State House

P.O. Box 001
